It has always been known that Spain is home to some of the greatest football players of all time – however, in the year 1927 a man by the name of Jose Maria Acha proposed the idea of a national football league, or a premier league. Some other countries had already adopted this idea and fans and players of football in Spain followed the trend and La Liga was born. La Liga championships have been held every year since 1929, with the exception of the years 1937, 1937 and 1939 due to the civil war that was taking place in Spain during that time.
The format of La Liga is similar to, but slightly different from other premier football league formats, including the months of the year during which the games take place. La Liga’s season begins in September, whereas most other premier football leagues begin their season in August and while other premier football leagues end their season in May, La Liga will play all the way into June for their championship. The winner of La Liga championships will automatically play the winner of the Copa Del Rey tournament.
La Liga is actually one of the most popular premier football leagues across the globe. With thousands upon thousands of viewers both live and on television, huge and expensive stadiums and the most prestigious of International sponsors, La Liga stands high above the rest and their popularity is only increasing! This year’s season of La Liga is more popular than ever with football superstars raising awareness and fan followings of premier league football across the globe.
The top teams of the La Liga premier football league include Real Madrid and FC Barcelona (two of the largest cities in Spain) with Real Madrid having taken the competition by storm in the many years it has been played. Real Madrid won the La Liga championships several years in a row as well as other years, including 1954 & 1955, 1961-1965, 1967-1969, 1986-1990 and more. The only team to even come close to the records that Real Madrid has is FC Barcelona. The FC Barcelona club won the first year that La Liga was played (1929) as well as 1952, 1953, 1959, 1960, 1974 and more. FC Barcelona had its largest winning streak during the years 1991-1994 with two follow up wins in 1998 and 1999.
Several La Liga players were nominated European Footballer of the Year, including Alfredo Di Stefano, Raymond Kopa, Luis Suarez, Johan Cruyff, Hristo Stoichkov, Rivaldo, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Fabio Cannavaro. It is obvious with its star players, extremely successful teams and clubs and their International recognition that La Liga is a fast growing and unstoppable premier football league in the world. Legions of fans are expanding by the masses and the football trend is catching on quickly in many other countries across the globe.
I want to check out the latest Spanish Primera Liga picks.
